VOLUNTEER AND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

What is Crime Victims Assistance Center?

The Crime Victims Assistance Center (CVAC) has provided rape crisis services to Broome County (under the auspices of Opportunities for Broome) since 1978.  CVAC was incorporated in 1986 and established as an independent entity providing  comprehensive victim's services.  These services include a 24-hour crisis line, medical and legal advocacy, counseling and assistance with Crime Victims Board compensation for all innocent victims of violent crime.

What do CVAC Volunteers and Interns do?

CVAC volunteers and interns provide a valuable service to the agency as well as the community.  After completing our extensive training program, volunteers and interns may serve in any of the following capacities:

CRISIS LINE

Volunteers and interns monitor the 24-hour crisis line.  The crisis line can be monitored from our office between 9 AM - 5 PM, or, by using our telephone forwarding system, from the privacy of your own home after regular business hours.  Individuals working the crisis line are expected to be available  for evening, weekend and holiday shifts.

ADVOCACY

In addition to the crisis line, you may wish to serve as a Victim Advocate.  Victim Advocates provide legal and medical accompaniment to crime victims.  The role of the advocate is to provide support and assistance to victims as they move through the legal and/or medical process.  Advocates respond to requests that are made by hospital staff and local police via the crisis line.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH

Child Assault Prevention (CAP) and Youth Assault Prevention (YAP) are prevention programs geared towards students K-12.  Volunteers and interns accompany CVAC staff to local schools and assist with role plays and demonstrations. They also assist with tabling and outreach events in our community.

How do I become a Volunteer or Intern?

Volunteers and interns are required to attend a 30-hour training that is conducted by CVAC staff.  After completing the training, you will be a Certified N.Y.S. Rape Crisis Counselor  In order to maintain these credentials, you will also be required to attend ten (10) additional hours of ongoing training annually.

We are looking for dependable individuals with a willingness to volunteer, an interest in helping other and excellent interpersonal skills.  These individuals will be available for evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
